Health classes explained

Preferred Plus through Standard: the carriers' rating names, how they differ, and what each means for your rate.

Term life carriers use rate classes to set pricing based on health and risk factors. Though terminology shifts across carriers, the tiers stay consistent: Preferred Plus (or Super Preferred), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, with additional table ratings above Standard. A separate rate tier applies to tobacco users.

What underwriters look at

Physical characteristics (weight-to-height ratio), blood work metrics (cholesterol, blood sugar), individual and family medical background.

How to use the quote tool

The health section of this tool looks for straightforward answers about your current condition: Excellent is assigned Preferred Plus, Very good is assigned Preferred, Good is assigned Standard Plus and Average is assigned Standard. Your quotes are built on that classification; the carrier may confirm, refine or adjust it when you apply. Uncertain which describes you? Compare quotes from two different classes to weigh the difference.

Susman Insurance Agency helps evaluate offers from multiple firms, so you're not limited to one carrier's terms.
